KOOLHAAS, J. M., F. MORA AND A. G. PHILLIPS.Effects o f food and water deprivation on self.stimulation o f the medial and sulcal prefrontal cortex and caudate putamen in the rat. PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 18(2) 329-331, 1977. Self-stimulation rates from electrodes, implanted in the terminal areas of the mesocortical and nigrostriatal dopaminergic systems, were measured during food or water deprivation. A significant increase of sulcal prefrontal cortex self-stimulation was observed after 24 and 48 hr of food deprivation. Serf-stimulation of the medial prefrontal cortex and the neostriatum was unaffected. Water deprivation had no effect on any of the structures tested. This suggests that similar effects found in the hypothalamus by other authors may be due to activation of the mesocortical system.

Effect of Morphine Self-Administration on Water and Food Intake in Rat
Objective Some lines of evidences demonstrate that opioids are involved in water and food intake. On the other hand the dopaminergic mesolimbic system that consists of ventral tegmental area (VTA), nucleus accumbens (NAc) and medial prefrontal cortex is considered to be crucial in the rewarding actions of opiates. There are also reports showing that this system has some roles in appetite and dr...
متن کاملEffects of visual deprivation on epileptic activity in mature rat visual cortex
Effects of visual deprivation on the induction of epileptiform activity were studied in layer II/III of mature rat primary visual cortex. Field potentials were evoked by stimulation of layer IV in slices from control and dark-reared (OR) rats. Picrotoxin (PTX)-induced epileptic activity was characterized by spontaneous and evoked epileptic field potentials (EFPs). The results showed that OR s...
متن کاملP81: Psychosocial Stress of Maternal Deprivation Enhanced Volume of Lateral Ventricle in Rat Brain
Brain areas implicated in the stress response include the amygdala, hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Neonatal stimulation of an animal by handling or by enhanced maternal care induces at adult age a decrease of the hypothalamo-pituitary adrenal (HPA) response to stressors, a decrease of anxiety in a novel environment, and neuroanatomical changes. In this present study we demonstrated that mat...
متن کاملCaloric deprivation increases responsivity of attention and reward brain regions to intake, anticipated intake, and images of palatable foods
Dietary restraint theoretically increases risk for binge eating, but prospective and experimental studies have produced contradictory findings, apparently because dietary restraint scales do not identify individuals who are reducing caloric intake. Yet, experimentally manipulated caloric deprivation increases responsivity of brain regions implicated in attention and reward to food images, which...
متن کاملThe Study of Apomorphine Effects and Heterogeneity in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex on the Dopaminergic Behaviors of Rats
Objective(s) While the nucleus accumbens and the striatum have received much attention regarding their roles in stereotyped behaviors, the role of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) has not been investigated to the same degree. Few studies have reported the role of the mPFC in dopaminergic induction of locomotor hyperactivity. The mPFC is a heterogeneous area (the anterior cingulated, prelimbi...
